Bristol Fungarium Maitake Extract Tincture 50ml, triple extracted, 1:4 ratio, UK grown
This incredible and unique maitake extract is made with only the fruiting body of the mushroom. The maitake mushrooms go through a long growing period to allow them develop their full spectrum of polysaccharides and triterpenes.
Maitake has been prized in Asia for thousands of years for its health benefits. The Japanese word “maitake” means “dancing mushroom,” a name derived from the reaction of people having found these mushrooms, which are very valuable. Also in Japan, maitake can grow to more than 50 pounds (20 kg), earning this giant mushroom the title ‘King of Mushrooms’.
Ingredients: Dried Maitake Fruiting Body, Purified Water, Organic UK Ethanol
Country of Origin: UK
Scientific name: Grifola Frondosa Polyporaceae Other Names: Maitake, Huishu Hua
How are they made?
The dried fruiting body of the mushroom is first slowly simmered at 55C for 30 hours, it is then boiled at 120C in an autoclave for 3 hours. This yields a number of the polysaccharides that are held firmly within the structural chitin walls. It then goes through an organic ethanol extraction at 95% alcohol for 6 weeks to release the triterpenes and acids which are not water soluble. Next the two solutions are mixed, this yields a cloud of polysaccharides as the ethanol briefly forces them out of the solution (it’s quite a beautiful thing to behold…) and finally produces a shelf stable 30% alcohol content.
The dark and cloudy colour of this tincture is an indication that this product has been produced from only the fruiting body, has been expertly extracted and contains high levels of polysaccharides and beta-glucans. Extracts that are pale and crystal clear can be a sign it may be low quality/concentration/extraction.
Extract ratio of this maitake extract?
The advertised extract ratios for mushroom powders can sometimes be confusing to understand. You may see widely varying ratios like 10:1, 8:1, and even 30:1. What this can often refer to is the total weight of the mushrooms when harvested (say 10kg) compared to the weight of the mushrooms when dried and powdered (say 1kg).
Therefore 10:1 is 10kg of fresh mushrooms = 1kg when dried. However this ratio is not an indication of extract strength, and does not refer to an extract. Be sure to ask about the extraction method and ratio when purchasing mushroom tinctures/powders.
1:4 extract ratio?
This product boasts a 1:4 ratio once extracted, and this refers to the actual content of maitake in the bottle.
To ensure a 1:4 extract ratio the mushrooms must be dried first so we are not including water weight in that measurement, a lot of companies will use the wet weight of the mushroom to make the products sound better than they are. We also need to powder the mushroom as finely as possible, and this is much better done with dry mushroom.
Maitake mushrooms are traditionally used to provide immune support, through activating natural immune cells. Recent research suggests maitake may also have antiviral and antimicrobial properties, and could also have high levels of antioxidants.
Please note – due to the nature of these products it’s possible for the contents to crystallise around the cap/dropper. If you have any issues with the dropper, the advice from Bristol Fungarium is to submerge the dropper in hot water for a few minutes, take it out and then leave it to dry before continuing to use.
